Step 1: Unroll your Mat

It sounds so easy right? Well, let me just tell you: it’s not.

We live immersed in our daily routine, constantly dealing with the many challenges of life whereas it’s our job, our family, our “to do” lists, our worries and anxieties, our fears. Sometimes we get distracted with unimportant things say….. Facebook, or such. Other times we get absorbed into urgent and critical situations that need to be resolved immediately . Life moves in a very intense and extreme peace and we feel like time flies without us even noticing. It’s the “Is it Christmas again?? Already??” kind of feeling.

Or, it may also happen that sometimes we feel really slow, as if we are moving in slow-mo. We just don’t have enough energy. Every so often we have to deal with body aches, headaches, other health related and emotional issues that makes us even slower and more fatigued. We wake up in the morning already exhausted and the simple idea of making an extra non-survival related effort feels like hiking a very tall mountain.

So, either for lack of time or lack of energy sometimes unrolling the mat seems like an impossible task.

When we practice Yoga we connect with the present time, with the here and now moment. That is called mindfulness. We leave the future and the past outside to be able to focus, to center, and to get in touch with what’s essential. That also requires a practice, a particular attitude, a “mode” that’s not easy to achieve. However, when you finally get to the moment that you unroll your mat and step on it something quite magical happens: all of the sudden you are THERE, you are PRESENT, you are READY. You are able to connect to the mat and the universe at a different level. You close your eyes, breathe in, and your yoga mode is on.

So next time instead of thinking and overthinking about unrolling your mat, instead of feeling guilty for not doing it, instead of making more and more excuses, just get the mat, unroll it and step on it. Everything else will follow.

Namaste,

Paola
